A Muslim Girl's Guide to Puberty

This is your guide, written and prepared lovingly by people who have been through the journey.

Changing Bodies

As you get older, you may become more aware of your body and the way you look. This happens to most boys and girls and it may cause you to worry and compare yourself with the people around you.

Hairy Happenings

Hair has a big part to play during adolescence. Not only is it a big part of your identity, the way you style it, take care of it and keep it clean, but it is also sprouting up in all sorts of interesting places!

Pubic Hair

During puberty, you will notice changes in your voice. Your larynx (Adam’s apple) will get bigger and your voice will begin to ‘break.’

Facial Hair

Some boys may experience changes to their breasts during puberty. This is normal and usually nothing to worry about.

Body Hair

With all the hormones in your body during puberty, your oil producing glands are affected. Pimples occur when the oil producing glands become over active.

Learn about Periods

Allah (the Most High) has created our bodies in the most perfect of ways. One of His names is Al-Musawwir which means The Fashioner. Every part of our bodies has a unique and important function.

  • How can I prepare?
  • How can I prepare?
  • How long will it last?
  • How much blood will I loose?

Who am I?

Whatever you’re feeling, Islam has given some beautiful guidelines which will stop you from getting totally lost and will always guide you back when you feel confused.

I want to be like my friends.

With the onset of puberty, your conversations with your friends will increase. Your friends and you are likely to be influenced by what you see around you in popular media and the culture that is represented through them.

Am I in Love?

Love is the name of a very special emotion and feeling. Love is something that makes us feel so good, safe and positive. But what do we understand about love and how does it effect us?

I feel uncertain?

You are not a child anymore, but neither are you completely an adult yet, and this can bring with it a lot of uncertainty.

I feel self conscious.

When the word self-esteem is mentioned, do you instantly question your hair, your eyes, your skin, your teeth and the shape of your body? If your answer is yes, welcome to the world of commercialised, manmade beauty!

Do I have a crush?

Having a crush on somebody means you feel really strongly about them; you really like them a lot. What are the signs of a crush and how can it cause problems? Learn how to survive a crush?

Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free-time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death. (The Prophet, peace upon Him.)
